The Country House ’Il Gelso’ is situated in the Parco Fluviale of the River Nera, within the commune of Ferentillo (TR). Ferentillo itself is a charming town, dominated by high, rocky ridges and fortifications, with two very distinctive towers that form an enclosure around this part of the Nera Valley. Above Ferentillo, at the summit of the hill known as La Pila North, is the wonderfully situated, old stone farmhouse of ‘Il Gelso’ . The farmhouse will be of particular interest to those who know of the route, taken on foot by St Francis of Assisi, on his journey to Rome; its position on this ancient route makes it the perfect place for an overnight stay on the Spoleto - Greccio stretch. However, visitors will find it hard not to stay longer. ‘Il Gelso’, which dates back to the end of 800, offers a panoramic position, within a dazzling landscape of olive groves, mountains, holm oak forests and farmland. There are distant views to the south, whilst the east offers a more dramatic and intimate scenario. To the west are the hills that lead up to the tiny, tenth century, walled village of San Mamiliano and finally the eye is led northwards, first across a tranquil meadow and then, upwards, towards the landscape and high peak of Monte Solenne.

The farmhouse itself has already been completely restored and is currently able to offer B & B from 1th April to 30th September, as well as a superb swimming pool , in a quiet and tranquil setting. ‘Il Gelso’ offers a country house environment with 22 beds, a new restaurant, local produce and crafts and of course, traditional Umbrian hospitality and cuisine. The Valnerina (little valley of the Nera) as a whole is considered exceptional within Umbria for many reasons, including: its historical remains and artefacts, its wild flowers and mountainous landscapes, its tranquillity and mysticism, and of course, its artistic, cultural and culinary traditions.

The Parco Fluviale is also an ideal place for sports such as canoeing, fishing, rafting and free rock climbing. Indeed, for those who prefer to combine cultural and sporting activities, mountain biking and trekking can help to make the Valnerina a rugged and unspoiled, open air museum, with churches, abbeys and palaces, holding art treasures ranging from the XII to the XVIII century. ‘Il Gelso’ is an easy car journey away from some of the very best of what Umbria has to offer, for example: the towns of Spoleto, Spello, Trevi and Assisi. On its doorstep also, are Lake Piediluco, the Marmore fall ,the mountains, churches and footpaths of Gavelli, and the serenely beautiful, 8th century abbey of San Pietro in Valle. A slightly longer journey can bring you to the liveliness of international events such as the Perugia Jazz festival or, just as easily, to mountain towns such as Cascia, Norcia and Castelluccio, culminating in the silence and magnificence of the Piano Grande. If you are looking for a holiday that will refresh you in body, mind and soul, then ‘Il Gelso’ awaits you!
